Dr Jane Hanrahan, Lecturer, Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Sydney.
Brief CV:
Dr Jane Hanrahan obtained her PhD in 1995 under the supervision of
Drs David Hutchinson and Paul Taylor and Professor David
Crout. In 1995 she obtained an EPSRC Postdoctoral fellowship working
with Professor David Knight at the University of Cardiff
(UK), investigating a novel synthesis of substituted pyrrolidines.
Following her return to Australia in 1997, she was employed as
research assistant by Professor Graham Johnston on an industrially
funded (Circadian Technologies) research project investigating
compounds that act at GABA-C receptors as potential memory enhancing drugs.
In 2002 she was appointed to a lectureship in pharmaceutical chemistry in the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Sydney. In the past 12 months Dr Hanrahan has been successful in obtaining substantial industrial funding from sources including Polychip Pharmaceuticals Pty Ltd and Pfizer Pty Ltd. Dr Hanrahan has considerable experience in the application of chemistry to biological problems, particularly in the design and synthesis of biologically active amino acids. She has 16 publications in internationally refereed journals, one patent, two invited reviews and a number of poster presentations at international chemistry and pharmacology conferences. In 2004 her research group will consist of 2 post-doctoral fellows, 2 research assistant and 2 PhD students. In the past three years she has supervised 7 Honours students, 4 who received first class honours.
Brief summary of expertise and significant research achievements:
Her research interests include the application of structural chemistry to
biological problems, particularly in the design and
synthesis of biologically active amino acids. This includes the use of
techniques such as small molecule X-ray crystallography,
NMR, computational chemistry, QSAR and related molecular modelling
techniques.
