Dr Sheridan Mayo, Research Scientist/Physicist, X-ray Science and Instrumentation Group, CSIRO Manufacturing & Infrastructure Technology.

Brief summary of expertise and significant research achievements:
Dr Mayo is currently a member of the XRSI team based at CSIRO Manufacturing and Infrastructure Technology at Clayton, Victoria. The team conducts pioneering research and development in the area of novel methods of high-resolution X-ray imaging.

Sheridan has been a significant contributor to the experimental development of the X-ray ultramicroscope, an instrument for phase-contrast imaging of microscopic samples at resolutions down to 60 nm. She has been involved with instrumental design and the development of techniques such as multispectral imaging, stereo-imaging and microtomography, as well as demonstrating the potential of the technology for a wide variety of applications in both X-ray phase-contrast microscopy and micro-tomography. This instrument is now being commercialised by the spin-off company XRT Ltd.

In addition to working on the X-ray ultramicroscope, Dr Mayo also has research interests in the application of micromanufacturing and lithography to the development of novel X-ray optics and nanophotonic structures. Prior to working at CSIRO worked in related areas of X-ray science, including X-ray diffuse scattering and computer modelling of disordered materials, X-ray crystallography, and non-linear optical materials.
