Brief summary of expertise and significant research achievements:
Some of these are detailed in invited Feature Articles in Chem. Commun., entitled 'Confinement and recognition of icosahedral main group cage molecules' and 'Recent advances in solventless organic reactions', and are elaborated below along with other issues.
1. Pioneering work on the use of host-guest chemistry involving
calix[8]arene in preparing multi-gram quantities of C60, >99.5% purity,
as a low cost process (Patent and Nature article, 1994).
2. Understanding the fundamental interactions involving fullerene
C60 host-guest chemistry.
3. Developing a qualitative test for complexation of C60 which
involves mesoporous silica (pores ca 5.4 nm), and addresses the
difficulties in identifying/encouraging host-guest interplay for C60.
4. Establishing major advances in structural chemistry of
complexes of fullerene C60, and also C70.
5. Establishing major contributions to the suramolecular
chemistry of large globular carborane molecules including o-C2B10H12,
CB11H12-, and Co(C2B9H11)2-.
6. Pioneering work on saddle shaped transition metal complexes,
which have two divergent curved surfaces, in forming complexes with
fullerenes and other globular main species.
7. Detailed understanding of the electrochemistry of C60 and
host-guest complexes in solution and the solid state.
8. Pioneering selective cross aldol condensation and related
reactions, and oligomerisation reactions under solventless conditions,
as well as oligomerisation reactions in an ionic liquid.
9. Developing solventless reactions for preparing some
calixarenes, eg. p-phenylcalix[n]arenas, directly from the
corresponding substituted phenol, and the use of ultra-high intensity
grinding to convert p-benzylcalix[6&8]arenes to the calix[5]arene, as
a host for selective binding of C60.
10. Understanding the mechanism of solventless reactions, detailed
in a full paper in J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2001.
11. Preparing Krohnke type pyridines under solventless and
alternative reaction media, eg. polyethylene glycol (PPG).
12. Seminal work on the chemistry of magnesium anthracene including
the synthesis of highly activated Mg impregnated in graphite, which is
relevant in preparing SWCNT loaded with Mg.
