Brief summary of expertise and significant research achievements:
Dr. Zomaya has contributed significantly to the solution of the problems in scheduling, task assignment and load balancing, real-time systems, parallel algorithms, and biologically-inspired adaptive computing systems. Scheduling problems are known to belong to a wide class of problems known to be computationally-intractable. The notion of computational intractability lies at the heart of computer science, and is central to the interface between discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science. Research on intractability has two long-range goals: (1) to identify which computational problems are tractable and which are intractable, and (2) to develop algorithmic strategies for dealing with problems that are intractable. Dr. Zomaya's research work, which is reported in the literature, concentrated on the development of general frameworks for the efficient scheduling and task allocation in parallel and distributed computing systems [1-6]. Some of this research concentrated on the development of efficient task scheduling techniques to automatically map numerically-intensive problems onto parallel computing platforms [6]. Such applications included solving dense-matrix calculations and recursive least squares computations that arise in many scientific applications. Dr. Zomaya and co-workers proposed new approaches to solve the dynamic scheduling problem [1,3,5]. Dynamic scheduling is known to be a computationally-intractable problem and the work in takes advantage of stochastic optimization techniques (automata-based systems) to provide an accurate, yet computationally-efficient, solution to the problem. Dr. Zomaya is a proponent of using biologically-inspired techniques (genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic, cellular automata, and others) to solve outstanding problems in parallel computing [1-6,8,10]. He extended some of these techniques to solve similar resource allocation techniques in mobile computing environment [12-15]. This is a relatively new area with growing interest and great potential for solving a wide range of problems similar to those in parallel computing. Furthermore, Dr. Zomaya proposed a number of original methods for scheduling in real-time systems such as robotic control and automobile crash simulation [17,18].
